Relaxing yet functional, the bedroom is our happy place. It’s the place you retire to after a busy day to unwind and relax, and for the parents out there, it may be the one place to have a quiet moment to yourself. So, shouldn’t our bedrooms be the ultimate luxury retreats? What if your bedroom could become your favourite hotel, without breaking the bank?
We asked our designers to share their top five design elements to give any bedroom that luxury hotel vibe - for £200 or less. Big impact, small investment.
1 | Handle your Handles
The most underrated items for big impact on a small budget are handles. Think: door handles, drawer handles, the handles of your bedside table – these are all incredibly simple to remove, and even simpler to replace. Though small, a new handle on a bedside table or chest of drawers can add a bit of luxury to your bedroom. You can easily get beautiful gold handles from hardware stores for just £3 to give the room an extra shimmer, or opt for some quirky vintage finds to add an eclectic twist. If you're looking for a more chic and contemporary look, Zara Home has always got some beautiful handles.
2 | Cushions
Cushions can be the best friends of any interior addict. They are easy to switch up with the seasons, and layering a selection of cushions on your bed will instantly elevate the space. There are many ways of layering cushions, but the simplest one is a classic 3-2-1 formation.
Start by placing three large cushions at the head of the bed as your base layer. These should match the base colour of your bedding, and ideally be plain. Next, add two smaller cushions as the second layer. This is where you can have fun with pattern and colour. For the final layer, add a smaller, rectangular cushion.
3 | Outdoors, indoor
Natural, beautiful and inexpensive; plants are a great way to decorate your bedroom for better sleep, and better living. Having plants in your bedroom adds colour, texture and elegance and they can easily be replaced if you get bored of a certain kind or size. They are also just as beautiful fake. Maximum impact for minimal effort.
4 | Art Attack
We've all heard the saying, 'a picture paints a thousand words'. From the brooding and dark to the bright and airy, a piece of art can project a whole new vibe onto the space it adorns.
Art is often associated with a hefty price tag, but it doesn’t have to be that way. For those who love to bring out their inner Picasso, why not paint your own abstract art by choosing 3 colours that will accentuate the scheme of your space and painting 1/3 of the canvas in each colour, blurring the separation of each section with the colour that came before it. Alternatively, opt for printing 6 or 8 A4 photographs that you love. Family and friends, Slim Aarons landscapes - whatever catches your eye. Frame them, hang them up in a gallery-wall-style mosaic and voila!
5 | Storage
It may sound a little dull, but sorting through and de-cluttering your space can make a big change - especially in a bedroom. An organised room will allow for our other tips to really stand out, and it doesn’t need to be an expensive process. There are many ways to bring smart storage into your home. For example, a great way to elevate any bedroom and add a touch of hotel-worthy-charm, is a storage trunk or bench at the foot of the bed. These are inexpensive and will counterintuitively make your space seem bigger while adding a touch of refinement.
